Question of the Week

You are caring for a patient in cardiac arrest and are inserting a transvenous pacemaker in the ED.  Do you inflate the balloon?

In the patient in cardiac arrest, inflating the balloon carries no benefit, as there is no forward flow of blood to guide an inflated balloon through the venous system into the right side of the heart

Thank you for participating in this week’s Question of the Week.  Please check back soon for the next question.
